The Importance of Healthy Wrists

Strong and pain-free wrists are essential for various activities, from weightlifting to everyday tasks. If you're experiencing wrist discomfort or limitations, it's crucial to address the issue to prevent further pain and dysfunction.

Progressive Exercises for Increased Wrist Capacity

Here's a progression of exercises designed to enhance the working capacity of your wrists:

1. Bottom-Up Kettlebell Carry & Press

  • Start with a kettlebell held upside-down (bottom-up) in one hand.

  • Engage your core and maintain a tall posture as you walk forward, focusing on stabilizing the kettlebell by gripping tight and keeping your elbow under the kettlebell.

  • Gradually increase the weight and duration of the carries to challenge your wrist strength and endurance further.

  • Incorporate overhead presses with the bottom-up kettlebells to further engage and strengthen the wrist stabilizers.

2. Progressive Alternating Hand Wrist Support

  • Begin by supporting your body weight on your hands with your wrists in a neutral position.

  • Slowly shift your weight from one hand to the other, alternating sides while maintaining stability and control.

  • As you become more proficient, increase the difficulty by raising your feet higher, so more forces are placed on your wrists.

3. Wall-Supported Handstand

  • Start with your hands shoulder-width apart and facing forward, approximately arm's length away from a wall.

  • Kick up into a handstand position, using the wall for support as needed.

  • Focus on maintaining a straight line from your wrists to your shoulders, engaging your core for stability.

  • Gradually increase the duration of your handstand holds and work towards achieving freestanding handstands to develop wrist strength and stability.

What To Do About Pinching Pains

If you experience pinching pain during these exercises, it may indicate a larger issue that requires further assessment. Booking a consultation with a qualified practitioner can help identify the root cause of your wrist pain and develop a targeted strategy for eliminating discomfort and restoring function.

Take Action for Healthy Wrists

Don't let wrist pain limit your activities and performance. By incorporating progressive exercises into your routine and seeking professional guidance when needed, you can achieve strong, pain-free wrists and enhance your overall quality of life.
